Overview

Red Rock Canyon State Park is a landscape that looks like it was painted by the desert itself — dramatic cliff formations in shades of red, white, pink, chocolate, and cream that have been carved by wind and water over millions of years. Located 45 minutes south of Ridgecrest on Highway 14, the park sits at the convergence of the Sierra Nevada, the El Paso Range, and the Mojave Desert, creating a geological crossroads of extraordinary beauty.

The park's colorful badlands and towering cliffs have made it one of California's most recognizable landscapes. Hollywood discovered Red Rock Canyon in the early days of filmmaking, and the dramatic formations have appeared in countless western films, TV shows, and commercials. The park was also historically significant to the Kawaiisu people, who left petroglyphs and other cultural artifacts throughout the area.

Beyond its visual drama, Red Rock Canyon is a treasure trove of paleontological significance. Fossils of prehistoric camels, three-toed horses, sabertooth cats, and rhinoceros-like creatures have been found in the sedimentary layers, providing evidence that this arid desert was once a lush savanna. The park offers developed camping with hookup sites, making it an accessible overnight destination for families, photographers, and anyone seeking a dramatic desert experience.
