Job Description
This vacancy announcement will be open from May 11, 2026 to May 15, 2026 or when 25 applications have been received. The vacancy will close on whichever day the first of these conditions are met. If the application limit is reached on the same day the announcement opened, the open and close date will be the same. Candidates are encouraged to read the entire announcement before submitting their application packages. This project will create a comprehensive mapping of the landscape of labor abuses related to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing operations globally. IUU fishing is often associated with severe labor abuses, including forced labor, with victims sometimes forced to work on fishing vessels for years without basic safety standards, fair wages, or access to medical care. The student(s) will develop a multi-dimensional database and analytical report that catalogs: - Legal Framework Analysis: Comparative assessment of foreign legal systems' capacity to hold bad actors accountable for forced labor in fisheries, identifying gaps where targeted judicial and prosecutorial training would be most effective - Case Documentation: Database of documented forced labor cases in fisheries, tracking their current status in accountability processes (investigation, prosecution, conviction, or closure) and identifying patterns in successful versus unsuccessful prosecutions. - Punitive Authorities: Comprehensive catalog of existing U.S. and international authorities that can be leveraged to address labor abuses in IUU fishing - Supply Chain Transparency Assessment: Evaluation of technologies and mechanisms for supply chain tracking that could help identify and exclude seafood produced with forced labor from U.S. markets, including electronic catch documentation schemes
