A Ridgecrest Tradition Since 2011
Every spring, the front lawn of Ridgecrest Regional Hospital transforms into something extraordinary. Hundreds of community members gather, each holding a small triangular envelope, waiting for the moment they'll release a Painted Lady butterfly into the desert sky in honor of someone they love.

The RRH Foundation Commemorative Butterfly Release is now in its 16th year, and it has become one of the Indian Wells Valley's most beloved annual traditions. What started as a small fundraiser has grown into a deeply personal community event that draws families, veterans, healthcare workers, and neighbors together every May.
What Is a Butterfly Release?
A butterfly release is a ceremonial event where live butterflies — typically Painted Lady butterflies (Vanessa cardui) — are released together as a symbol of remembrance, hope, transformation, and celebration of life. They are common at memorials, weddings, and community gatherings across the country.
Each butterfly arrives in a small, individual envelope and remains calm in the cool, enclosed space. When participants open their envelopes in the warm outdoor air, the butterflies gently take flight. The experience is quiet, emotional, and visually stunning — dozens of orange-and-black wings lifting into the desert sky at once.
Painted Ladies are specifically chosen because they are hardy, non-invasive, and native to much of North America, including the Mojave Desert. They pose no ecological risk and are the same species you'll see migrating through the Indian Wells Valley each year. Learn more about native desert flora and fauna on our plants page.

How It Works
Participants purchase a butterfly through the RRH Foundation — either online or by filling out a form at the Foundation office. Each butterfly can be dedicated to a loved one who has passed, someone battling an illness, or simply someone you want to honor.
On the day of the event, attendees check in and receive their butterfly envelope. A short ceremony is held on the hospital's front lawn, often including readings, music, and a moment of collective reflection. Then, on cue, everyone opens their envelopes together for a synchronized release.
The butterflies don't fly away in a rush. They linger, landing on shoulders, hands, and nearby flowers. It's common to see families standing quietly, watching a butterfly rest on a child's finger, savoring the moment.

The 2026 Release
This year's 16th Annual Commemorative Butterfly Release takes place on May 2, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Ridgecrest Regional Hospital, located at 1081 N. China Lake Blvd.
Proceeds from the event directly support the RRH Foundation's mission, including the return of hospice care services to the Indian Wells Valley — a cause that resonates deeply with many families in the community.

Why It Matters
The butterfly release isn't just a fundraiser. For many in Ridgecrest, it's the one day a year they set aside to publicly remember someone they've lost. In a small, tight-knit community like the Indian Wells Valley, that collective act of remembrance carries real weight. It's one of the many things that make Ridgecrest special.
A community that shows up for each other, year after year — that's what makes the Indian Wells Valley home. If you're considering moving to Ridgecrest, events like this are a perfect introduction to the heart of the community.
