Desert Safety Tips

Carry More Water Than You Think You Need

Plan for 1 liter per hour of hiking in summer. The desert is unforgiving. Always carry extra.

Start Early, Finish Before Noon (Summer)

June–September temperatures can exceed 110°F. Hike at dawn and be back by 10–11am.

Tell Someone Your Plans

Cell service is sparse or nonexistent in BLM land. Leave a detailed itinerary with a contact.

Watch for Flash Floods

Desert washes can flood suddenly from storms miles away. Never camp in dry washes.

Carry a Paper Map or GPS

Phone service disappears quickly outside city limits. Download offline maps before you go.

Dress in Layers

Desert temperatures can swing 40°F between day and night. Always bring a warm layer.
